Short answer

You can get an IRS business tax transcript through the IRS business tax account, which shows eligible payroll and income transcripts; by filing Form 4506-T, free, for delivery by mail; or through a tax professional with authorization. Account transcripts show filings, payments, penalties and balances, and are useful for loans, catch-up filings and resolving notices.

When are transcripts useful?

  • Loan applications, where lenders confirm the returns provided. See books for a loan.
  • Catching up on unfiled years, to see what the IRS has on record.
  • Resolving notices, by checking payments and how they were applied.
  • Buying or selling a business, to confirm tax compliance.
  • Checking that elections, such as S corporation status, are recorded.

What if you need a full copy of a return?

Transcripts are free; a full copy of a filed return is ordered on Form 4506, with a fee per return, and takes longer. For most purposes a transcript is enough.

Can foreign-owned LLCs get transcripts?

Yes, through Form 4506-T or a US tax professional with authorization. Owners abroad without US identity credentials may find online access difficult, so a representative is often the quickest route. See filing US forms from abroad.
