Who handles sales tax?
TikTok Shop acts as a marketplace facilitator, collecting and remitting sales tax on its orders in states with marketplace facilitator laws. Sellers do not collect on those orders. If you also sell through your own store, you remain responsible for those sales. See marketplace facilitator laws.
Keep TikTok Shop's tax reports, which show the tax it collected for each state, in case a state asks you to show which sales the marketplace already taxed. Sales tax collected by TikTok is not part of your income.
Which costs should be recorded?
| Item | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Gross product sales | Income |
| Refunds and returns | Reduce income |
| Referral and transaction fees | Marketplace fees |
| Affiliate commissions paid to creators | Commissions expense |
| Shop Ads and promotions | Advertising |
| Samples sent to creators | Marketing expense at your cost, or cost of goods sold |
| Shipping labels and fulfilment | Shipping and fulfilment |
Keep TikTok Shop's settlement statements for each payout period, since they are the only document showing the commissions and fees deducted.
Where you pay creators directly for content, outside TikTok Shop's affiliate system, those payments are contractor costs, and US creators paid $2,000 or more in 2026 should receive Form 1099-NEC from you.

What about creators earning affiliate commissions?
Commissions earned by promoting TikTok Shop products are taxable income for the creator, reported on Schedule C, and free products received for promotion are taxable at their value. See taxes for content creators.
Sellers who also post their own content and earn creator rewards from TikTok report that as income too, separately from shop sales.
What are the common mistakes?
- Recording payouts as sales, so commissions and fees are hidden.
- Not recording samples sent to creators.
- Assuming TikTok Shop's sales tax collection covers your own website.
- Leaving inventory purchases as expenses instead of cost of goods sold.
What does an example look like?
A seller has $50,000 of gross TikTok Shop sales, $2,500 of refunds, $3,600 of referral fees, $7,500 of affiliate commissions, $2,000 of samples and $4,000 of ads. Product costs are $15,000. Profit before other expenses is $15,400, reported on Schedule C, with self-employment tax.
How should samples be tracked?
Samples sent to creators for review are a marketing cost. Record each one at your cost, not the retail price, with the creator's name and date, so the cost is supported if questioned. Samples that come from inventory reduce stock, so take them out of inventory when sent. Shipping for samples is part of the same cost.
How are returns and damaged goods handled?
Refunds reduce sales. Returned items that can be resold go back into inventory; damaged items that cannot be resold are written off, which increases cost of goods sold. TikTok Shop deducts some refund-related fees from payouts, which should be recorded as fees rather than netted against sales.
What if you also sell on your own site?
Sales through your own store are not covered by TikTok Shop's sales tax collection. You collect and remit tax where you have nexus, counting your total sales into each state, including marketplace sales in states that count them. See economic nexus.
What about sellers outside the US?
TikTok Shop sets its own rules on who can sell in the US. Sellers abroad often use a US LLC. US income tax then depends on whether the business has a US trade or business, such as US inventory or staff. See selling on US marketplaces as a non-resident.
