How to get a sales tax permit

A sales tax permit is the registration that lets, and requires, you to collect a state's sales tax. Applying is usually quick. What trips businesses up is applying in the wrong order or forgetting what comes with the permit. This guide covers both.

To get a sales tax permit, apply to the revenue department of each state where you have nexus, usually online. You will need your legal business name, EIN or SSN, business address, owners' details, what you sell and your expected sales. Many states issue permits free; some charge a fee or ask for a security deposit. Register before you start collecting tax.

When do you need a permit?

In each state where you have nexus and sell taxable goods or services that are not collected for you by a marketplace. In most states it is unlawful to collect sales tax without one. See physical vs economic nexus.

What do states ask for?

  • The business's legal name and any trade name, and its entity type.
  • The EIN, or the owner's Social Security number for a sole proprietor without one.
  • Business and mailing addresses, and where records are kept.
  • Names, addresses and identification of owners, partners or officers.
  • What you sell, how you sell it, and your start date in the state.
  • Estimated monthly taxable sales, which helps the state set your filing frequency.

How do you apply?

  2. Gather the information

    Formation documents, EIN and owners' details.

  3. Apply online

    Through the state revenue department's registration portal.

  4. Pay any fee or deposit

    Display the permit if the state requires it for physical locations.

Can you register in several states at once?

States that are members of the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement share a central registration system that registers a remote seller in several member states in one application. Non-member states, including large ones such as California, Texas, Florida and New York, are registered separately.
